Core Web Vitals welcomes Interaction to Next Paint (INP) and First Input Delay (FID) is getting the boot today, on March 12, 2024


Interaction to Next Paint (INP) has been introduced as the newest addition to Google’s Core Web Vitals today. No longer is the FID, which many SEOers, including myself didn’t care about. The FID metric to me was a vanity statistic and I guess you must have had a really terrible site not to score on this. Having run competitor analyses, I’ve never come across a really bad one. All in all, INP is a valuable tool to measure user experience and should be given more attention by SEOers. Now it has to!

In other words, it marks a significant shift in how website performance is measured and optimized for search engine rankings. This blog aims to provide SEO professionals and their clients with an understanding of what INP is. It also discusses its implications for SEO, and how it differs from the previously used metric, First Input Delay (FID).

INP stands for Interaction to Next Paint, a metric that measures the responsiveness of a webpage by analyzing the time it takes from a user’s interaction (like clicking a button or link) to the moment the browser renders the response to that interaction. It is designed to offer a more comprehensive view of page interactivity and responsiveness. It captures the latency of all user interactions and reports a single value that represents the threshold below which most interactions occur. For example, if a page loads in 1 second, any interaction that takes longer than 1 second would be classified as an INP of more than 1.

This importance I believe is going to get tougher as time marches on. I for one suffer with websites not adding things to baskets quickly enough, or needing a refresh as things are not working. This ‘EXPERIENCE’ measure is very important.

For SEO professionals and their clients, INP is more than just another performance metric to monitor. It is a critical component of user experience, which is a significant factor in Google’s search ranking algorithm. However, optimizing for INP presents several challenges, including managing complex web architectures, balancing functionality with performance, and dealing with third-party scripts. Web architectures are complex because they involve multiple interconnected components, such as web servers, databases, and third-party scripts, that need to be managed and streamlined. Additionally, optimizing for INP requires balancing functionality with performance, as performance optimisation can impact functionality and vice versa. Finally, dealing with third-party scripts can be difficult because they are unpredictable and difficult to improve.

What it also means is SEO professionals need to adopt a holistic approach, considering all Core Web Vitals and other performance metrics. This is to ensure a well-rounded and high-performing website.


Understanding the Difference between
INP vs. FID

While both INP and FID measure aspects of webpage interactivity and responsiveness, they focus on different elements. FID measures the delay in processing the first user interaction on a page, providing insights into a site’s initial responsiveness.

In contrast, INP measures the responsiveness of a webpage throughout the user’s visit, capturing the latency of all interactions.

By analyzing the user experience beyond the initial load, INP becomes a more comprehensive metric. It’s importance is derived from experience, and having had a huge roll-out with Google’s March algorithm, if you’ve been watching GSC, you’ll notice that Google typically adds a ‘value’ and a ‘technical’ component to its algorithm. I think it’s a coincidence.
